2007 Recipient

All of us in the Pathways family are especially pleased to pay tribute to Dr. H. Garry Gardner. As one of the original members of the Pathways Medical Round Table, Dr. Gardner has a prominent and undeniable role in our success story, and it is fitting that we publicly recognize and acknowledge his enormous contributions this evening. Dr. Gardner is considered a pioneer in pediatric medicine. He currently has a private practice in Darien, Illinois, specializing in pediatrics. He is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Northwestern University Medical School and is on the medical staff of Hinsdale Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital.

In addition to being a valued member of the Pathways Medical Round Table, Garry serves on the Executive Committee of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is the chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention, and a member of the AAP Institutional Review Board. Garry also is co-chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the DuPage Easter Seals Center, is on the Editorial Board of Pediatric News, is on the Board of Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition, and is an active participant on the Head Start Health Advisory Committee and the DuPage Interagency Council on Early Prevention.

Dr. Gardner is past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Illinois Chapter. He has served on the Medical Advisory Board of the YWCA of the USA, is past president of the Chicago Pediatric Society, was a member of the DuPage County Medical Society Board of Directors, and is a founding Board Member of the Loyola Ronald McDonald House. As past president and co-founder of the Illinois Child Passenger Safety Association and as a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Occupant Protection and the Secretary of State’s Traffic Safety Advisory Council, Garry championed--and is considered the inspiration for--the seat belt law in Illinois.

Dr. Gardner is largely responsible for the Pathways Growth and Development Chart, which has been distributed to more than two million people worldwide. He is the recipient of numerous professional honors, including the Hinsdale Family Practice Residency’s Educator of the Year Award, the Illinois Buckle Up America! Award, the Easter Seals DuPage Crystal Heart Award and, most recently, the 2007 Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Garry is an exceptionally talented pediatrician, medical educator, and advocate for children. He has been a vital part of our Pathways’ journey, and we are proud to honor him with the 2007 Pathways Pioneer Award.
